If you work in the Netherlands, you’ve probably heard the phrase korte lijnen – Dutch for “short lines”. It’s a small expression with a big meaning. In Dutch work culture, korte lijnen describes the ability to reach the right people quickly and get things done efficiently. And that’s exactly why networking is essential, whether you’re new to the Netherlands or already established in your role.
As a career coach for internationals, I see how strong professional relationships make daily work smoother, collaboration easier, and opportunities more accessible.
Getting Things Done: A Lesson from Obama
In this interview with LinkedIn, former president Obama shared that the most valuable people in any organization are the ones who proactively solve problems. He said many people can explain why something didn’t work. But the people he valued most were those who said: “Let me take care of that.”
This proactive attitude is exactly what leaders appreciate – and it’s where your network becomes crucial.
What the Dutch Mean by “Korte Lijnen”
In Dutch companies and organizations, korte lijnen means having quick, direct access to people. When you have a strong network – people who trust you, know you, and want to support you – work becomes smoother and more efficient.
I first heard this phrase while working at the University of Groningen. Back then, I didn’t fully grasp its meaning. Now, in my part-time role as an account manager, where KPIs and results matter, I experience the power of korte lijnen every day. When you know the right person, getting things done becomes much easier. I still remember a director saying:
“Not a problem, it’s just a phone call away. We hebben korte lijnen.”
And he was right. With the right relationships, problems are solved quickly, and collaboration flows effortlessly.
Networking Isn’t Just for Job Searching
Many people tell me: “I don’t need to network because I already have a job I like.” That’s wonderful, but have you considered how your network affects your daily work?
A solid network helps you:
- get information faster
- collaborate more efficiently
- solve problems quickly
- gain trust and visibility
- show your value beyond your job description
The truth is: you cannot do everything alone. Work today is collaborative, and your relationships determine how easily you can make things happen.
Networking is not only for finding hidden job opportunities. It directly affects how effective, appreciated, and supported you are at work.
Build Your Korte Lijnen Before You Need Them
Networking in the Netherlands doesn’t have to be awkward or forced. It’s about offering value and building meaningful, genuine connections – inside and outside your organization.
When you have those short lines, work moves faster, collaboration becomes natural, and your impact grows.
